The film asks: What are the consequences when a people \u2014 in this case, black and African people \u2014 are denied the opportunity to define themselves and their culture? Llewellyn Smith and Christine Herbes-Sommers also produced the film.<\/p>\n<p>Herskovits founded the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University in 1938, and established the American program in African studies there a decade later.<\/p>\n<p>Brown,\u00a0professor of history and of African and African American Studies, is the author of \u201cThe Reaper\u2019s Garden: Death and Power in the World of Atlantic Slavery,\u201d which received the Merle Curti Award, the James A.
