However, the study also discovered that when the vitamin was taken by itself, no significant protection was offered.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This study supports a growing consensus that combined calcium and vitamin D is more effective than vitamin D alone in reducing a variety of fractures,&quot; said lead researcher John Robbins. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;Interestingly, this combination of supplements benefits both women and men of all ages, which is not something we fully expected to find,&quot; he added. <\/p>\n<p>Experts recommend a dose of 10 mcg of vitamin D and 1,000 mg of calcium on a daily basis, according to <em>Med Page Today<\/em>. For high-risk patients, the nutrients should be supplemented by bisphosphonates or other antiosteoporotic drugs. <\/p>\n<p>Bone fractures are a significant cause of disability in older people.
