{"id":240307,"date":"2010-01-28T04:30:22","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T09:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/?p=63957"},"modified":"2010-01-28T04:30:22","modified_gmt":"2010-01-28T09:30:22","slug":"hey-sammy-joe-wilson-would-like-you-to-tone-it-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/240307","title":{"rendered":"Hey Sammy, Joe Wilson would like you to tone it down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite moment of the State of the Union address, as noted and captured by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.americablog.com\/2010\/01\/sotu-live-blog.html\"> John Aravosis at AmericaBlog<\/a>, was Justice Samuel Alito&#8217;s reaction to being mildly criticized.<\/p>\n<p>One of the sillier customs of the SOTU Address (don&#8217;t call it a &#8220;speech&#8221;) along with the ritualistic, half-hearted, rapturous standing ovations is that the Supreme Court comes to sit there and do their impression of the Sphinx.  They don&#8217;t stand, they don&#8217;t applaud, the just sit there.  But it is a custom and it is to be rigorously observed.<\/p>\n<p>But when Obama criticized the recent <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.supremecourtus.gov\/opinions\/09pdf\/08-205.pdf\">Citizens United vs. FEC<\/a><\/em> decision as ignorning precedent and opening the floodgates to profligate special interests (especially corporate) spending&#8230;Alito, who next year will be there in his &#8220;<em>Quaker State, NAPA Autoparts, Viagra, Black Velvet Whisky Robe<\/em>&#8220;, was not amused:<\/p>\n<p><div class='hitEmbed_left'><object width=\"400\" height=\"246\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4pB5uR3zgsA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/4pB5uR3zgsA&#038;hl=en_US&#038;fs=1&#038;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"400\" height=\"246\"><\/embed><\/object><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Alito has now spoken more in the House Chamber than Clarence Thomas has in the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the post-speech reaction of Chris Matthews, <a href=\"http:\/\/seminal.firedoglake.com\/diary\/26959\">is always a &#8220;special&#8221;  uh, thing<\/a>, he claimed to have liked the speech so much that for at least an hour, he almost forgot Obama was a black guy.
