{"id":240768,"date":"2010-01-28T07:05:01","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T12:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freakbits.com\/?p=1483"},"modified":"2010-01-28T07:05:01","modified_gmt":"2010-01-28T12:05:01","slug":"file-sharer-says-%e2%80%9cno%e2%80%9d-to-riaa%e2%80%99s-25k-offer-to-settle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/240768","title":{"rendered":"File-Sharer Says \u201cNo\u201d to RIAA\u2019s $25k Offer To Settle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just days after a judge reduced the $1.92m damages bill handed down to Jammie Thomas to a slightly more sensible $54,000, her legal team have turned down an offer to settle for $25,000.<span id=\"more-1483\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/freakbits.com\/media\/riaa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" \/>Last year Jammie Thomas lost her retrial against the RIAA and was ordered to pay $1.92 million in damages for sharing 24 songs using Kazaa.<\/p>\n<p>Outrage at the huge damages eventually resulted in Judge Davis <a href=\"http:\/\/freakbits.com\/riaa-victims-1-92-million-fine-reduced-to-54000-0123\">lowering the damages<\/a> last week to $54,000.<\/p>\n<p>To try and bring the whole sorry episode to an end, yesterday the RIAA made an offer to Thomas to settle the case for $25,000, if she agreed to ask the judge to &#8220;vacate&#8221; last week&#8217;s decision, which means removing it from the record.<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyers immediately <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-31001_3-10442482-261.html\">rejected the offer<\/a>, indicating they would only accept a settlement which means Thomas has to pay nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The RIAA said that this rejection means that they will now challenge the judge&#8217;s decision last week to lower the $1.92m damages.<\/p>\n<p>Will this ever come to an end?
