The invasion of Iraq<\/a> had no \u2018legal basis in international\u2019 law, a senior government<\/a> lawyer said today.<\/p>\n

Sir Michael Wood, who was the senior legal adviser at the Foreign Office, told the Iraq<\/a> Inquiry he disagreed with the advice of the Attorney General Lord Goldsmith that military intervention was lawful.<\/p>\n

\u2018I considered that the use of force against Iraq<\/a> in March 2003 was contrary to international law,\u2019 he said in a written statement.<\/p>\n

\u2018In my opinion, that use of force had not been authorised by the (United Nations) Security Council, and had no other basis in international law.\u2019<\/p>\n
