{"id":242228,"date":"2010-01-28T08:33:41","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T13:33:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.earthportal.org\/news\/?p=3087"},"modified":"2010-01-28T08:33:41","modified_gmt":"2010-01-28T13:33:41","slug":"conn-company-plans-east-coast-%e2%80%98hydrogen-highway%e2%80%99","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/242228","title":{"rendered":"Conn. company plans East Coast \u2018hydrogen highway\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/autopia\/2010\/01\/east-coast-hydrogen-highway\/\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/images_blogs\/autopia\/2010\/01\/hydrogen_fueling_station.jpg\" width=\"309\" align=\"left\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/eenews.net\/climatewire\/2010\/01\/28\/13\/\" >Climatewire<\/a>: The East Coast soon may have a &#8220;hydrogen highway,&#8221; a series of solar refueling stations covering roads from Portland, Maine, to southern Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut-based SunHydro plans to construct 11 stations with technology that uses solar-generated electricity to split water into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Oxygen\">oxygen<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Hydrogen\">hydrogen<\/a>, which then can be used as fuel for hydrogen cars. The process results in less <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Air_pollution_emissions\">emissions<\/a> &#8212; and is cheaper &#8212; than other hydrogen technologies, like shipping it or reforming it from natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>Several automakers are developing hydrogen fuel cell vehicles despite the surge of electric cars, but a lack of a refueling network has prevented companies from selling their vehicles widely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve just decided that somebody needed to start this process,&#8221; said SunHydro President Michael Grey. &#8220;You have a lot of the big companies talk about it, but nobody&#8217;s stepped up to the plate and made it happen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The first stations, which will service 10 to 15 cars per day, will be located in Portland, Maine; Braintree, Mass.; Wallingford, Conn.; South Hackensack, N.J.; Claymont, Del.; Richmond, Va.; Charlotte, N.C.; Atlanta and Savannah, Ga.; and Orlando and Miami, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>Each will cost about $3 million to install and will rely on private donors (Keith Barry, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/autopia\/2010\/01\/east-coast-hydrogen-highway\/\" ><em>Wired<\/em><\/a>, Jan. 27). <strong>&#8211; EL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"akst_link\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthportal.org\/news\/?p=3087&amp;akst_action=share-this\"  title=\"E-mail this, post to del.icio.us, etc.\" id=\"akst_link_3087\" class=\"akst_share_link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Share This<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climatewire: The East Coast soon may have a &#8220;hydrogen highway,&#8221; a series of solar refueling stations covering roads from Portland, Maine, to southern Florida.
