{"id":243283,"date":"2010-01-28T12:55:54","date_gmt":"2010-01-28T17:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gas2.org\/2010\/01\/28\/ibm-using-two-of-worlds-fastest-supercomputers-to-develop-lithium-air-batteries\/"},"modified":"2010-01-28T12:55:54","modified_gmt":"2010-01-28T17:55:54","slug":"ibm-using-two-of-world%e2%80%99s-fastest-supercomputers-to-develop-lithium-air-batteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/243283","title":{"rendered":"IBM Using Two of World\u2019s Fastest Supercomputers to Develop Lithium Air Batteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4580 alignleft\" style=\"float: left\" src=\"http:\/\/go635254.s3.amazonaws.com\/gas2\/files\/2010\/01\/small_li-air_battery_diagram.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" \/>With a theoretical storage capacity more than 10 times higher than today&#8217;s best lithium-ion batteries, it&#8217;s no wonder <a href=\"http:\/\/gas2.org\/2009\/07\/28\/new-lithium-air-battery-has-huge-storage-capacity\/\" >lithium-air batteries<\/a> are being touted as one of the types of batteries that could make <a href=\"http:\/\/gas2.org\/2008\/04\/23\/affordable-electric-cars-coming-to-us-in-2009\/\">electric cars<\/a> truly mainstream.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.er.doe.gov\/ascr\/incite\/index.html\" >US Department of Energy program<\/a> to provide large amounts of supercomputer time to advance cutting edge, real world research, IBM scientists are partnering with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transportation.anl.gov\/features\/2009_Li-air_batteries.html\" >government scientists from both Argonne and Oak Ridge National Laboratories<\/a> to model and develop the materials needed to make lithium-air batteries a reality.<\/p>\n<p>The award provides up to 24 million hours of computer time on two of the world&#8217;s fastest supercomputers&#8211;which, you guessed it, are housed at the two national labs.
