{"id":246752,"date":"2010-01-29T07:55:30","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T12:55:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.earthportal.org\/news\/?p=3089"},"modified":"2010-01-29T07:55:30","modified_gmt":"2010-01-29T12:55:30","slug":"patagonia-mountains-growing-at-record-rate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/246752","title":{"rendered":"Patagonia mountains growing at record rate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/visibleearth.nasa.gov\/view_rec.php?id=4219\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/veimages.gsfc.nasa.gov\/4219\/Patagonia.A2002226.1445.1km.jpg\" width=\"274\" align=\"left\" height=\"361\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/eenews.net\/Greenwire\/2010\/01\/28\/7\/\" >Greenwire<\/a>: Mountain climbers will have to climb a bit higher in the coming decades to reach the summit of the Patagonia mountains in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/LAC_Collection%3A_Protected_Areas_and_Biosphere_Reserves\">South America<\/a>, researchers reported in a new study.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years the mountains, located in the southernmost region of South America, have sprung up as the weight of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Glacier\">glaciers<\/a> melted away, they said.<\/p>\n<p>GPS-based measurements indicate that between 2003 and 2006, the Patagonia mountains grew at a rate of 1.5 inches per year, found a team of researchers led by Reinhard Dietrich of Institut f\u00fcr Planetare Geod\u00e4sie, Technische Universit\u00e4t Dresden, Germany. Their findings are reported in the latest issue of the journal <em>Earth and Planetary Science Letters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Before I saw this article, I would have said the highest rate [of mountain growth] was at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/article\/Glacier_Bay_National_Park_and_Preserve%2C_United_States\">Glacier Bay, Alaska<\/a>,&#8221; said Bruce Molnia, a veteran glacier researcher and geologist with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eoearth.org\/contributor\/usgs\">U.S. Geological Survey<\/a>.
