Bush era.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2)<\/strong> Hatch accuses the Democrats of not &#8220;act[ing] in good faith on this&#8221; and &#8220;not even putting on the veneer of bipartisanship.&#8221;\u00a0 That is so true &#8211; I can&#8217;t even count the number of times that the Republicans have extended the hand of compromise and pulled back a bloody stump.\u00a0 Mainly because I can&#8217;t think of any.\u00a0 There&#8217;s been an awful lot of bloody stump-pulling in the opposite direction, though.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3)<\/strong> Hatch warns of &#8220;outright war&#8221; and &#8220;heated animosities&#8221; if the Democrats use reconciliation.\u00a0 Um, Senator?\u00a0 I think that ship is halfway around the world by now.<\/p>\n<p>In essence, Hatch is threatening that Republicans will be obstructionist assholes if Democrats try to do something about Republicans being obstructionist assholes.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t doubt that they&#8217;ll make good on his promise, but I&#8217;m not sure how effective it is to threaten to do the exact same thing that you&#8217;re already doing and were going to continue doing anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Hatch&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slaughterhouse-Five\">Slaughterhouse Five<\/a> pretzel logic reminds me of how the Republicans used al Qaeda&#8217;s presence in Iraq <em>after <\/em>the invasion as some kind of retroactive vindication of it: &#8220;You see?\u00a0 We <em>had <\/em>to invade Iraq to prevent it from harboring al Qaeda after we invaded!&#8221;\u00a0 What should be a rebuke of Republican irresponsibility instead becomes its justification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"akst_link\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/share-this\/share-icon-16x16.gif\" alt=\"Share This icon\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/?p=64298&amp;akst_action=share-this\"  title=\"Email, post to del.icio.us, etc.\" id=\"akst_link_64298\" class=\"akst_share_link\" rel=\"noindex nofollow\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Photo by musicFIRSTcoalition Yes, Orrin Hatch really did accuse Democrats of acting in bad faith for considering budget reconciliation to fix health care reform, and threatened them with &#8211; wait for it &#8211; partisan hostility.
