{"id":248746,"date":"2010-01-29T12:51:52","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T17:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/?p=1610"},"modified":"2010-01-29T12:51:52","modified_gmt":"2010-01-29T17:51:52","slug":"more-voices-add-to-the-chorus-give-us-a-job-creating-climate-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/248746","title":{"rendered":"More Voices Add to the Chorus: Give Us a Job-Creating Climate Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The State of the Union is the main topic of conversation this week, but President Obama wasn&#039;t the only one who had strong words about climate legislation.<\/p>\n<p>First, 17 U.S. Senators sent a <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/documents\/10757_Senators-Letter-for-Comprehensive-Climate-Energy-Legislation-01-26-10.pdf\">letter to President Obama<\/a> [PDF ]asking him to put &#034;clean energy and climate legislation capable of creating new economic opportunities&#034; <strong>at the top of his list of priorities for this year<\/strong>. The letter says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Legislation that invests in clean energy and puts a meaningful limit on carbon pollution will be a major job creator.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Obviously, from what we heard Wednesday night,\u00a0they&#039;ll get no argument from\u00a0the President on that point.<\/p>\n<p>Second, a group of almost three dozen environmental, labor, faith\u00a0and\u00a0civic groups called on\u00a0Senate leaders to <strong>avoid the trap of an &#034;energy-only&#034; bill <\/strong>and instead pass\u00a0strong\u00a0legislation that includes a cap on carbon pollution.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.edf.org\/documents\/10755_Organizations-Letter-for-Comprehensive-Climate-Energy-Legislation-1-27-10.pdf\">letter to the Senate leaders<\/a> [PDF], Majority\u00a0Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the groups &#8212; including EDF &#8212; say an energy bill alone would be &#034;just more of the same&#034;\u00a0at a time when\u00a0our economy needs a new direction.<\/p>\n<p>The letter points out that the U.S. passed major energy-only bills in 2005 and 2007 that\u00a0haven&#039;t done much to stimulate the economy, and says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Energy and climate legislation must be connected and comprehensive to create the opportunity to build a new clean energy economy that secures our energy supplies, fosters innovation, and creates the new jobs we so desperately need here in the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One more note: in an earlier post we told you about <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.edf.org\/climate411\/2010\/01\/22\/new-ad-shows-broad-support-for-a-climate-bill\/\">USCAP&#039;s new ad campaign<\/a>.
