A few months ago I got a phone call that changed my life forever. A very serious sounding man on the other end, asking for me, then saying “Lieutenant Kalman…you’ve been tagged for mobilization and you’re going to Afghanistan.”<\/p>\n
It’s the kind of call other reservists like me don’t always want to get. Some even fear it. It definitely gave me chills. Not because I was scared, but because I had never felt that kind of honor or pride.<\/p>\n
Before you go to war, you have to go through combat training. That’s where I am now, getting “educated” at FT Dix New Jersey. It’s like Army boot camp here, minus the marching and the folding. The rest of it – the weapons training and learning how to save lives – well, that’s the real deal.<\/p>\n
