{"id":251594,"date":"2010-01-30T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-01-30T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:www.mindhacks.com:\/\/a8b544d26e2da33e6bdb195a0cb973b7"},"modified":"2010-01-30T03:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-01-30T08:00:00","slug":"the-rise-and-fall-of-antidepressants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/251594","title":{"rendered":"The rise and fall of antidepressants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" class=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mindhacks.com\/blog\/files\/2010\/01\/newsweek_pillbrain.jpg\" width=\"168\" height=\"120\" \/><i>Newsweek<\/i> has an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/id\/232781\">article<\/a> that charts the rise and fall of antidepressants from their status as a wonder drug that made people &#8216;better than well&#8217; to the recent evidence that suggests for many people, they&#8217;re not much better than placebo.<\/p>\n<p>The piece particularly follows the work of psychologist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irving_Kirsch\">Irving Kirsch<\/a> who was the first to conduct a <a href=\"http:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/journals\/pre\/1\/2\/2a.html\">meta-analysis<\/a> of the effects of anti-depressants back in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Titled &#8220;Listening to Prozac but hearing placebo&#8221; it suggested that the drugs were hardly more effective than placebo and, for many, marked Kirsch out as a biased and dangerous &#8216;anti-psychiatrist&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>However, later studies in a similar vein by both Kirsch and others have supported his original findings and many countries have now changed their treatment recommendations as a result.<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Newsweek<\/i> article tracks this story but also picks up on many important subtitles in the story, notably that the research doesn&#8217;t suggest that antidepressants are useless &#8211; quite the opposite &#8211; just that their effect is only in part due to their direct chemical effect; and that many patients in trials work out that they&#8217;re not taking placebo because of the side-effects and this realisation can trigger a stronger placebo effect.<\/p>\n<p>It also integrates evidence from the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/trials\/practical\/stard\/index.shtml\">STAR*D study<\/a>, one of the most complete on the best methods to treat depression.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a good overview of the debate on the effectiveness of these iconic drugs, this is a good place to start.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, if you&#8217;re interested in a good analysis of the most recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20051569\">study<\/a> in this area, just published in the <i>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/i>, the <i>Neuroskeptic<\/i> blog has a great <a href=\"http:\/\/neuroskeptic.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/severe-warning-for-psychiatry.html\">write-up<\/a> and analysis of what this means for the concept of depression itself.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/id\/232781\">Link<\/a> to <i>Newsweek<\/i> piece on antidepressants (via @<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/DrDavidBallard\/status\/8412806364\">DrDavidBallard<\/a>).<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/neuroskeptic.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/severe-warning-for-psychiatry.html\">Link<\/A> to write-up of JAMA study at <i>Neuroskeptic<\/i>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newsweek has an excellent article that charts the rise and fall of antidepressants from their status as a wonder drug that made people &#8216;better than well&#8217; to the recent evidence that suggests for many people, they&#8217;re not much better than placebo.
