{"id":259750,"date":"2010-02-01T12:22:36","date_gmt":"2010-02-01T17:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/?p=6246"},"modified":"2010-02-01T12:22:36","modified_gmt":"2010-02-01T17:22:36","slug":"off-broadway-hip-hop-musical-ghetto-chronicles-will-star-in-queens-college-celebration-of-black-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/259750","title":{"rendered":"Off-Broadway Hip-Hop Musical, Ghetto Chronicles, Will Star In Queens College Celebration of Black History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong><em>&#8211; Armstrong Museum Tours; Documentary Film Screening; \u201cTalking Quilt\u201d Display; Lecture and Panel Discussion on Haiti Are Among Other Free Public Events <strong><em>&#8211;<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>FLUSHING, NY, January 29, 2010 \u2013 Following a successful four-year run at over 75 venues \u2013 including off-Broadway theaters, middle and high schools &#8212; the soulful hip-hop musical <em>Ghetto Chronicles<\/em> will top the lineup of public events at Queens College in commemoration of Black History Month.\u00a0 The show is a \u201craw, rare and real\u201d musical journey through the pain and triumphs of inner-city living as told through the stories of eight young, multi-ethnic actors, rappers and singers, including QC alum Britton Saffer, <em>Class of \u201807<\/em>.\u00a0 Written, produced and directed by world-renowned choreographer Duane Whitley (DWhit), <em>Ghetto Chronicles<\/em> addresses such issues as random violence, invisible fathers, unwed pregnancies, HIV\/AIDS, racial intolerance and incarceration, yet ends with an inspiring message of hope.\u00a0 At this performance on February 25, from 6 \u2013 8 pm in LeFrak Concert Hall, a special dance tribute to the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti will also be included.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Ghetto Chronicles<\/em> is representative of the exciting program of public events we have planned to celebrate the voices of the past, present, and future in African-American history, art and culture,\u201d said Ron Huggins, QC\u2019s Acting Assistant Director of Student Life.\u00a0 \u201cThey are sure to entertain, educate and enlighten many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following events, including <em>Ghetto Chronicles<\/em>, are free and open to the public.\u00a0 All will take place from 12:15 \u2013 1:30 pm.\u00a0 More information is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/qc.cuny.edu\/bhm\">http:\/\/qc.cuny.edu\/bhm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Wednesday, February 3\u00a0<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><strong>Documentary film:\u00a0 <em>Eyes on the Prize: Awakenings (1954-1956)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>Highlights of the civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King\u2019s contributions. The film screening will be followed by a discussion with QC alum Yudraj Tiwari, <em>Class of \u201909<\/em> who\u2019s very knowledgeable about Dr. King\u2019s work and achievements.\u00a0<br \/>\nCampbell Dome.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Monday, February 8, and Wednesday, February 10:\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><strong>Creation and Display of \u201cA Talking Quilt,\u201d <\/strong>presented by Queens College Africana Studies Professor Marjorie Blenman-Roane:<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Designed to foster tolerance and respect among the diverse ethnicities represented at the college, a quilt will be created from pieces of fabric donated by students, staff and faculty that tell stories of family and cultural traditions and beliefs.\u00a0 Included in the finished quilt on display will be traditional Adinkra symbols which were used to express proverbs and philosophical ideas and were stencilled on many African textiles as far back as the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century.<br \/>\nQ-Side Lounge &#8212; Dining Hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Wednesday, February 17:\u00a0 \u201cThe History of Stepping\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><strong>Lecture and Performance:\u00a0 <\/strong>Adam Barnes, director of the Stepping School, LLC,<strong> <\/strong>will discuss the meaning and origins behind the widely popular and expressive dance phenomenon called \u201cstepping.\u201d Because African-American fraternities in the 1970s have been credited with introducing this dance form, a brief stepping demonstration will be performed by members of\u00a0 fraternities, sororities and clubs.<br \/>\nPatio Room \u2013 Dining Hall.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Monday, February 22:\u00a0 \u201cHaiti:\u00a0 The Unknown\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><strong>Lecture:\u00a0 <\/strong>Africana Studies Professor Evelyn Julmisse will present a discourse on the unknown story of Haiti and its global influences.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Campbell Dome<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Wednesday, February 24<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><strong>Panel Discussion:\u00a0 <\/strong>Political Science Professor Francois Pierre-Louis will moderate<strong> <\/strong>a discussion<strong> <\/strong>with members of the QC community who have been directly or indirectly impacted by the devastation of the recent earthquake in Haiti.\u00a0<br \/>\nQ-Side Lounge \u2013 Dining Hall<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER EVENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Saturday, February 6, 13, 20, 27; 2 pm<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><strong>Lectures and Free Guided Tours at the Louis Armstrong House Museum<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Louis Armstrong House Museum (LAHM) will celebrate the contributions of jazz great Louis Armstrong to the Civil Rights Movement with house tours and presentations.<\/p>\n<p>Louis Armstrong was one of the world\u2019s greatest entertainers. He was loved and revered internationally as the father of jazz. He was a genius trumpeter and singer, a goodwill ambassador, charismatic movie star, prolific writer, and talented collage artist. But he was rarely viewed as a civil rights pioneer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A series of fun, family-friendly events will shed light on the life and legacy of Louis Armstrong, including a look at the many barriers Armstrong broke during his remarkable 50-year career.
