\nA coalition
\nof 16 religious organizations, representing a wide range of religious diversity, has signed a letter urging Congress and the White House to support
\ncomprehensive health care reform that does not "create new restrictions to
\nabortion." Their letter below.\n<\/p>\n
\n\n\tThe
\n\tundersigned religious and religiously affiliated organizations urge Congress
\n\tand the White House to support comprehensive, quality health care reform that
\n\tdoes not create new restrictions to abortion coverage beyond what is in current
\n\tlaw. The health reform bills that were initially brought to the House and
\n\tSenate floors were crafted to be abortion neutral, an appropriate reflection of
\n\tthe fact that this legislation is intended to serve Americans of many diverse
\n\treligious and moral views.\n\t<\/p>\n\n\tWe believe
\n\tthat it is our social and moral obligation to ensure access to high quality
\n\tcomprehensive health care services at every stage in an individual’s life.
\n\tReforming the health care system in a way that guarantees affordable and
\n\taccessible care for all is not simply a good idea-it is necessary for the
\n\twell-being of all people in our nation.\n\t<\/p>\n\n\tThe passage
\n\tof meaningful health reform legislation will make significant strides toward
\n\taccomplishing the important goal of access to health care for all.
\n\tUnfortunately, the House and Senate-passed versions of health reform include
\n\tlanguage that imposes significant new restrictions on access to abortion
\n\tservices. These provisions would result in women losing health coverage they
\n\tcurrently have, an unfortunate contradiction to the basic guiding principle of
\n\thealth care reform. Providing
\n\taffordable, accessible health care to all Americans is a moral imperative that
\n\tunites Americans of many faith traditions. The selective withdrawal of critical health coverage from women is both
\n\ta violation of this imperative and a betrayal of the public good.\n\t<\/p>\n\n\tThe use of
\n\thealth reform to advance new restrictions on abortion services that surpass
\n\tthose in current law may serve only to derail this important effort.\u00a0 American families should have the opportunity
\n\tto choose health coverage that reflects their own values and medical needs, a
\n\tprinciple that should not be sacrificed in service of any political agenda.\n\t<\/p>\n\n\tWe urge
\n\tCongress and the White House to support meaningful health reform that, unlike
\n\tthe provisions in the House and Senate-passed versions of health reform,
\n\tmaintains current law in reference to the funding of abortion care.\n\t<\/p>\n\n\t \n\t<\/p>\n
