<\/span>Family and friends of those who died
\nin the crash of an Alaska Airlines jet in the ocean off Ventura County gathered
\nSunday at a memorial sundial erected in the victims’ honor at Port
\nHueneme.
<\/br>
<\/br>Eighty-three passengers and five crew members died Jan. 31,
\n2000, when the jetliner from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, plunged into the
\nPacific Ocean. There were no survivors. <\/span>
<\/br>
<\/br>A Coast Guard
\ncutter sat off Port Hueneme as those attending Sunday’s memorial walked
\nto the beach to release balloons and place flowers in the water.

<\/br><\/span>A United States Coast Guard helicopter flew over the memorial event at Port Hueneme before flying to the crash site off Anacapa Island and releasing roses.
