Bush years, you find that he, too, forever told us that prosperity was just around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing illustrates this better than<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/10\/business\/economy\/10leonhardt.html?_r=2&amp;src=tptw\"> David Leonhardt&#8217;s cool new budget widget<\/a> in the NYT.<\/p>\n<p>With a scroll of your mouse, you can go through each forecast from 2001, which looked like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.businessinsider.com\/image\/4b67532e0000000000156afa\/2001-government-budget-deficit.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"2001 government budget deficit\" \/><\/p>\n<p>to 2009, which looked like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.businessinsider.com\/image\/4b675349000000000096a8b5\/2009-government-budget-deficit.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"2009 government budget deficit\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And you can also read David&#8217;s excellent tale of our budget collapse, which begins like this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There are two basic truths about the enormous deficits that the federal government will run in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The first is that <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/people\/o\/barack_obama\/index.html?inline=nyt-per\" title=\"More articles about Barack Obama.\">President Obama<\/a>&rsquo;s agenda, ambitious as it may be, is responsible for only a sliver of the deficits, despite what many of his Republican critics are saying.
