{"id":266362,"date":"2010-02-02T14:52:12","date_gmt":"2010-02-02T19:52:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/economics\/2010\/02\/02\/consumer-bankruptcies-remain-elevated\/"},"modified":"2010-02-02T14:52:12","modified_gmt":"2010-02-02T19:52:12","slug":"consumer-bankruptcies-remain-elevated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/266362","title":{"rendered":"Consumer Bankruptcies Remain Elevated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Consumer bankruptcies jumped 15% from a year earlier as consumers continue to struggle with high debt loads and elevated unemployment, the <strong>American Bankruptcy Institute<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p>On a positive note, the 102,254 consumer bankruptcies filed in January represented a 10% decline from December, but filings at the end of last year were abnormally elevated from usual seasonal levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u0093Consumer filings this year will likely surpass the 1.4 million consumer filings recorded in 2009,\u0094 said ABI Executive Director <strong>Samuel J. Gerdano<\/strong>. <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB126263231055415303.html\">The number of bankruptcies in 2009<\/a> was at the highest level since the government revamped rules in 2005, making it more difficult to file for bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>Even amid expectations the unemployment rate will begin to decline this year and home prices appear to be stabilizing, consumers are expected to remain under pressure.
