The Asian Development Bank is extending $1 million in grants to China’s 1.5-megawatt solar thermal project that will try to pave the way for a full-scale 50-MW plant in the future. <\/p>\n

The multilateral bank is providing $1 million for the proposed solar thermal project to be built in Gansu province in western China over the next 13 months. This is the bank’s first foray into solar thermal technology in the country. <\/p>\n

The Chinese government plans to install the first megawatt-scale solar thermal plant in Asia while simultaneously accelerating large-scale solar power development at home. On its own, it is providing $1.7 million for the pilot Gansu solar thermal project’s cost.<\/p>\n

The small-scale project will facilitate a prefeasibility study for the 50-MW solar thermal plant. A roadmap will then be drafted to develop the larger Gansu solar thermal project that will serve as a model to other provinces in the future.<\/p>\n

The bank noted that China has been making rapid progress in developing renewable energy sources, especially wind. Solar energy<\/a> has not been able to keep up as it faces knowledge and expertise gap on the most appropriate technologies, especially in solar thermal. <\/p>\n

Solar thermal technologies<\/a> harness the sun’s radiation to boil special fluids whose steam runs a turbine that generates electricity. They have certain advantages over photovoltaic technologies, which use solar panels, such as the potential to store energy after sundown and competitive pricing of electricity per kilowatt-hour. <\/p>\n

“Understanding new technologies through megawatt-scale pilot projects is crucial to building up knowledge and capacity that may lead to the development of large-scale plants,” said Ashok Bhargava, principal energy specialist at the bank’s East Asia department. <\/p>\n

China Huadian<\/a> Engineering Company will build the solar thermal plant scheduled to go online in March 2011.\n<\/p>\n
