{"id":268108,"date":"2010-02-02T15:37:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-02T20:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5587346.post-8169610319888866150"},"modified":"2010-02-02T15:40:53","modified_gmt":"2010-02-02T20:40:53","slug":"lessons-from-my-external-drive-purchase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/268108","title":{"rendered":"Lessons from my external drive purchase"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>I needed a SATA drive enclosure in a hurry for a work machine, and a 1TB external drive wouldn&#8217;t be a bad thing either.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So I ran out to Best Buy and bought an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Iomega-Prestige-Desktop-External-34275\/dp\/B001D7REJ4\">Iomega Prestige 1 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive<\/a> for only $10 + taxes more than Amazon.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It&#8217;s only <i>after <\/i>I make my purchase that a friend asks &#8220;are you sure it&#8217;s not soldered in&#8221;? WTF? <b>Soldered<\/b>?<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Turns out these low end drive\/enclosure bundles save pennies on connectors by soldering drives in.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>No, this one isn&#8217;t soldered in. And it&#8217;s easier to open than <a href=\"http:\/\/tech.kateva.org\/2008\/12\/my-review-lacie-1-tb-usb-20-external.html\">the LaCie enclosure I have at home<\/a>, though it&#8217;s a bit of tight fit. It&#8217;s also, of course, an <b>IDE drive <\/b>(the drive is Samsung, the case fanless, with a metal case that hopefully radiates nicely).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sigh. Makes sense. Why use a SATA drive when there are still lots of cheap IDE drives around? The USB connection is much slower than the drive anyway. It just didn&#8217;t occur to me that IDE drives were still sold. I thought they were extinct!.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So now I have my backup drive, but I still need my SATA connector.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I learned two lessons.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The first lesson is that there are no quick purchases in tech. Unless it&#8217;s something you have direct knowledge of, you can&#8217;t duck the research chore.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The second lesson is that life with Macs has made me unsuited for the intricacies of PC hardware management.
