It goes something like this:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mceItem\" src=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/blogs\/2010w05\/econ%20trends.JPG\" alt=\"\" height=\"381\" width=\"550\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>As you can see, economists are most bullish on the budget deficit. Here&#8217;s what they&#8217;d like to do about it:<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mceItem\" src=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/blogs\/2010w05\/tax.JPG\" alt=\"\" height=\"311\" width=\"550\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Less tax on income, and more on consumption, particularly of energy and emissions. Sadly, the public doesn&#8217;t seem too keen on the concept. I have to say, I was a little surprised to see the extent of the deficit hawkishness among the bloggers. Around a third felt that the debt was an &#8220;unacceptable risk&#8221; to the economy when sitting at levels between 50% and 75% of GDP. Note that the current debt-to-GDP ratio is above 75%, and yet markets are basically untroubled by this. Meanwhile, nearly half of surveyed bloggers listed as one of their top three priorities for deficit reduction adoption of <em>constitutional amendments<\/em> forcing balanced budgets or a spending cap. And this, when asked to take into account what solutions might or might not be politically achievable. Economists note: it is <em>more<\/em> difficult to get an amendment passed than it is to get a bill through the Senate.
