Other times, it is an estate issue. After seeing several people try to strip my neighbor\u2019s house, which hasn\u2019t been settled on, but is vacant and under contract, I realized that, even in nice neighborhoods, a vacant house might as well have a neon \u201cPlease vandalize me!\u201d sign flashing out front. So, what do you do when you have to leave a house vacant?<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blisstree.com\/files\/2010\/02\/small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"small\" style=\"border-right: 0px;border-top: 0px;margin-left: 0px;border-left: 0px;margin-right: 0px;border-bottom: 0px\" height=\"175\" alt=\"small\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blisstree.com\/files\/2010\/02\/small_thumb.jpg\" width=\"244\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Get insurance \u2013 There is insurance for vacant homes and, if you don\u2019t have it and you move away, your current policy may not cover your empty house. When my house was empty for several weeks between my \u201cI so don\u2019t want to be a landlord anymore!\u201d epiphany and the sale of the home, I got a special, slightly more expensive policy. <\/li>\n<li>Consider a security system \u2013 The system will discourage a lot of potential vandals from even trying to break in and will scare most of the rest of them away.<\/li>\n<li>Ask for help \u2013 Enlist a reliable neighbor to keep an eye on the place and ask him or her to call the police if kids or strangers are loitering around. Specifically state that no one is authorized to be on the property and that you\u2019ll notify the neighbor if you do expect anyone to come by. This way, your neighbor won\u2019t be left to wonder if perhaps you did authorize someone to come in with a pickup truck and take away all the porch furniture and anything else that wasn\u2019t nailed down.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Photo: K.
