{"id":272372,"date":"2010-02-03T17:17:56","date_gmt":"2010-02-03T22:17:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.greenrightnow.com\/?p=8720"},"modified":"2010-02-03T17:17:56","modified_gmt":"2010-02-03T22:17:56","slug":"no-child-left-inside-included-in-education-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/272372","title":{"rendered":"No Child Left Inside included in education budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> By <a href=\"mailto:aphillips@greenrightnow.com\">Ashley Phillips<\/a><br \/>\nGreen Right Now<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to get kids outdoors, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbf.org\/Page.aspx?pid=687\">the No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Act<\/a>, aims to connect children with nature by making it a part of their education.<\/p>\n<p>NCLI became the first environmental education bill debated on the house floor in a long time last year when it passed in the House, but failed to progress through the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>With the installation of the new Congress, NCLI now needs reconsideration in both houses to pass.<\/p>\n<p>Advocates believe it could get a second chance because environmental education has been given a clear opening in the US Department of Education&#8217;s budget plan released this week.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed budget includes new funding of $1 billion for programs that improve instruction to support college- and career-readiness standards. Among those eligible for funding are classes deemed important to a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/overview\/budget\/budget11\/summary\/edlite-section1.html\">Well-Rounded Education,&#8221;<\/a> which includes environmental literacy.<\/p>\n<p>The Well-Rounded Education category calls for<strong><\/strong> $265 million &#8212; an increase of $38.9 million or 17 percent &#8212; to consolidate seven current authorities and expand support for the subjects important to a complete curriculum, including history, the arts, foreign languages, environmental literacy, and economic and financial literacy, according to the budget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdvancing the environmental literacy of our students is key to addressing today\u2019s increasingly complex environmental and related economic, social, natural resource, and energy issues,\u201d said Don Baugh, Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbf.org\/Page.aspx?pid=687\" >No Child Left Inside Coalition<\/a>, in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will not only better prepare students for college and the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century workforce, but help to combat childhood obesity and related health problems by getting kids outside to learn about the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On behalf of our entire 1,500 member Coalition, I commend the President and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for recognizing the critical role that environmental education plays in preparing our students for the green economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 9pt; font-family: 'Helvetica';\">Copyright \u00a9 2010 Green Right Now | Distributed by Noofangle Media<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Ashley Phillips Green Right Now In an effort to get kids outdoors, the No Child Left Inside (NCLI) Act, aims to connect children with nature by making it a part of their education.
