According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/04\/technology\/04amazon.html\">New York Times<\/a>, it has bought a small pre-product startup called <a href=\"http:\/\/touchco.com\/contact.html\">Touchco<\/a> and plans to merge it with its Kindle hardware division, Lab126. Two words: touchscreen Kindles.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-96700\" href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2010\/02\/03\/amazon-buys-touchscreen-startup-report\/touchco\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  title=\"Touchco\" src=\"http:\/\/gigaom.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/touchco.jpg?w=300&#038;h=112\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"112\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-96700\" \/><\/a>Touchco, a six-person startup out of the New York University\u00a0Media Research Lab, has developed a sensitive surface that detects multiple pressure levels of unlimited simultaneous inputs and which it claims to be able to produce cheaply, as <a href=\"http:\/\/bits.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/12\/30\/multi-touch-screens-could-enable-many-new-devices\">detailed<\/a> by\u00a0the same New York Times writer reporting the acquisition, Nick Bilton, at the end of December. It has since taken the content off its web site and replaced it with a note saying, &#8220;Thank you for your interest in Touchco.  As of January 2010, the company is no longer doing business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">Amazon is trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2010\/01\/28\/5-ways-the-kindle-can-fight-the-ipad\/\">step up its Kindle game<\/a> to match the market &#8212; for instance, <a href=\"http:\/\/jkontherun.com\/2010\/01\/21\/amazon-opens-kindle-up-to-developers-dont-think-it-will-matter\/\">opening the device up<\/a> to outside developers&#8217; applications &#8212; but as James at jkOnTheRun has repeatedly <a href=\"http:\/\/jkontherun.com\/2010\/01\/12\/e-book-readers-everywhere-who-cares\/\">pointed out<\/a>, what really matters for e-book readers is content.
