{"id":274891,"date":"2010-02-04T01:12:49","date_gmt":"2010-02-04T06:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.disinfo.com\/?p=21514"},"modified":"2010-02-04T01:12:49","modified_gmt":"2010-02-04T06:12:49","slug":"vermont-legislature-considers-eugenics-apology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/274891","title":{"rendered":"Vermont Legislature Considers Eugenics Apology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most people don&#8217;t realize that many of the terrible eugenics and marriage laws that characterized Nazi Germany trace their origin back to the United States.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to see our history clearly, and this story is a step in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burlingtonfreepress.com\/article\/20100203\/NEWS03\/2030301\/Vermont-Legislature-considers-eugenics-apology\">Burlington Free Press<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If the state of Vermont had carried out a plan to sterilize his grandmother, Don Stevens said Tuesday, he &#8220;wouldn&#8217;t be here.&#8221;Many Vermonters of mixed French Canadian and American Indian heritage, like Stevens&#8217; grandmother, as well as poor, rural whites, were placed on a state-sanctioned list of &#8220;mental defectives&#8221; and degenerates in the 1930s and placed in state institutions like the Home for the Feeble Minded in Brandon.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>Some had surgery after Gov. Stanley Wilson in 1931 won enactment of a sterilization law.
