The dog&#8217;s life has apparently returned to normal &#8212; but what of his much-lauded rescuer, paramedic Joe St. Georges? Our colleague Carla Hall profiled St. George; here&#8217;s an excerpt:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8608d4c970b-pi\" style=\"float: right;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"St Georges\" border=\"0\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8608d4c970b \" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8608d4c970b-800wi\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"St Georges\"><\/img><\/a> On computer screens in offices and TVs in airport terminals, people all over the country watched live on the stormy afternoon of Jan. 22 as [St. Georges] was lowered by cable from a helicopter to <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/unleashed\/2010\/01\/firefighters-rescue-dog-from-flooded-los-angeles-river-in-vernon.html\">save the frantic animal<\/a> from the fast-moving L.A. River in Vernon.<\/p>\n<p>And they kept watching, transfixed, as dog and man were hoisted up, spinning horizontally over the gray water.<\/p>\n<p>St. Georges, who got a badly bitten thumb for his efforts, became an instant celebrity, appearing on the &quot;Today&quot; show and &quot;The Ellen DeGeneres Show&quot; and accepting the accolades of the animal-loving world.<\/p>\n<p>For saving the dog, <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/unleashed\/2010\/01\/vernon-dog-rescue-la-river.html\">now identified as Spikey from Maywood<\/a>, the 50-year-old firefighter paramedic has been barraged with hundreds of cards from well-wishers and lauded on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Thank-LAs-dog-saving-fire-fighter-Joe-St-Georges\/290125668382?ref=search&amp;sid=547034265.2308603661..1#%21\/pages\/Thank-LAs-dog-saving-fire-fighter-Joe-St-Georges\/290125668382?v=wall&amp;ref=search\">Facebook page<\/a> set up by his admirers.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;You are proof that there are angels walking among us!&quot; gushes one of the 5,353 fans of the page (as of press time) established to &quot;thank LA&#8217;s dog-saving fire-fighter Joe St. Georges!&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I&#8217;m humbled, I&#8217;m amazed,&quot; said St. Georges of all the attention. &quot;I don&#8217;t know what to make of it.
