{"id":278270,"date":"2010-02-04T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-04T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:www.mindhacks.com:\/\/8a60f385264048dbf5e6da485764c174"},"modified":"2010-02-04T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-04T18:00:00","slug":"eureka-brain-special-and-more-fighting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/278270","title":{"rendered":"Eureka brain special and more fighting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" align=\"right\" class=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mindhacks.com\/blog\/files\/2010\/02\/times_tms.jpg\" width=\"176\" height=\"172\" \/><i>The Times<\/i> has just released its monthly science magazine, Eureka, with a special issue on the brain and all the articles freely available online.<\/p>\n<p>There doesn&#8217;t seem to be a way to link to a whole issue, but inside you&#8217;ll find an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011414.ece\">piece<\/a> on the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to temporarily switch off bits of the working brain, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011480.ece\">profile<\/a> of neurosurgeon Huma Sethi, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011979.ece\">article<\/a> on commercial brain-computer interfaces, a remarkable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011376.ece\">piece<\/a> on how old injuries can &#8216;return&#8217; to affect phantom limbs as well as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011305.ece\">exploration<\/a> of the link between brain activity and sporting skill.<\/p>\n<p>Probably my favourite is an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011992.ece\">article<\/a> on how forensic science and criminology are increasingly using neuroscience, and there&#8217;s also an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011485.ece\">account<\/a> of a writer&#8217;s experience of being brain scanned and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011485.ece\">description<\/a> of the Total Recall project which aims to digitally record everything about day-to-day life.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s also a piece by me, where I go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/science\/eureka\/article7011457.ece\">head-to-head<\/a> with Baroness <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Susan_Greenfield,_Baroness_Greenfield\">Susan Greenfield<\/a> in the Fight Club section where we debate &#8216;Is screen culture damaging our children\u2019s brains?&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Greenfield goes for the usual &#8220;maybe.. perhaps&#8230; could it be?&#8230; tada! compulsive gambling and schizophrenia!&#8221; argument, so I hope I&#8217;m a little more evidence-based. It&#8217;s more in-depth but is less coherent and has typos and bad jokes.<\/p>\n<p>Also don&#8217;t miss out on the fantastic downloadable brain poster, which is available online as a (big) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/multimedia\/archive\/00680\/Eureka_Brain_680626a.jpg\">jpg file<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still reading through all the articles but the ones I&#8217;ve read so far have been excellent.
