The Chairmen&#8217;s Conclusions identify the main messages from the conference:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The 2010 target has inspired action, but will not be reached in full<\/li>\n<li>Biodiversity loss and degradation of ecosystem services have increasingly dangerous consequences for human well-being, even survival for some societies <\/li>\n<li>Urgent action is needed to address the loss of biodiversity, especially to avoid tipping points <\/li>\n<li>Biodiversity is the natural capital for sustainable development <\/li>\n<li>Inaction is more expensive than action <\/li>\n<li>Many more economic sectors than we realize depend on biodiversity<\/li>\n<li>Biodiversity and climate change are inextricably linked <\/li>\n<li>Implementation! Implementation! Implementation! <\/li>\n<li>Now is the time to scale up our science and knowledge <\/li>\n<li>We need to communicate that biodiversity matters<\/li>\n<li>Substantially more resources are needed <\/li>\n<li>Getting the biodiversity targets right<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Trondheim Conferences on Biodiversity have been held since 1993, as a forum for science-policy dialogue. The organizers hope that this year&#8217;s conference will be a valuable contribution to the negotiations on post-2010 biodiversity targets at future meetings during the year. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Jostein Gaarder<\/strong>, a Norwegian author and Countdown 2010 Ambassadors commented the event as follows: &#8220;I have decided not to be a pessimist on behalf of nature and biological diversity. We can&#8217;t permit us the decadence it is to be pessimists. Pessimism is merely another word for disclaiming liability, another word for laziness. Midway between pessimism and optimism is what is called hope, and the practical extension of hope is what we call struggle.
