{"id":282030,"date":"2010-02-05T11:45:06","date_gmt":"2010-02-05T16:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/?p=6099"},"modified":"2010-02-05T11:45:06","modified_gmt":"2010-02-05T16:45:06","slug":"bp%e2%80%99s-hayward-%e2%80%9cthere-are-no-silver-bullets%e2%80%9d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/282030","title":{"rendered":"BP\u2019s Hayward: \u201cThere Are No Silver Bullets\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.greenenergyreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/v1\/img\/cat\/policy.png\" width=\"8\" height=\"8\" alt=\"\" title=\"Policy\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6100\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 160px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Tony_Hayward_500xvar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6100\" title=\"Tony_Hayward_500xvar\" src=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Tony_Hayward_500xvar-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">BP&#39;s Hayward: Urging a middle path<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copenhagen marked \u201cthe end of the beginning\u201d of the effort to curb carbon emissions; it was the first time countries agreed to act, regardless of whether there is a global treaty, BP CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/The-Challenge-of-Energy-Security-Speech-BP.pdf\">Tony Hayward said yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech that repeatedly evoked Churchill, Hayward argued for a middle road in energy policy: he urged carbon pricing to encourage investment in renewables but largely dismissed \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/2010\/01\/uk-launches75b-programme-to-build-thousands-of-offshore-wind-turbines\/\">headline-grabbing<\/a>\u201d but costly projects such as offshore wind.<span id=\"more-6099\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The speech, at the London School of Business, was effectively Hayward\u2019s \u201cState of the Union\u201d address, where he laid out his agenda and analysis of the global energy climate.<\/p>\n<p>It comes several days after the company <a href=\"http:\/\/greenenergyreporter.com\/2010\/02\/bp-cuts-expenses-at-renewable-energy-unit-by-4-bln\/\">announced its earnings<\/a> and talked about scaling down its renewables business to focus on commercially viable areas such as biofuels and solar.<\/p>\n<p>In his talk, Hayward consigned gains in renewable energy technology and production to the future and argued for realism in energy policy<\/p>\n<p>He listed a series of opposing concepts \u2013 energy security vs. energy independence, hydrocarbons vs. renewables \u2013 and each time came down on the side of a moderate approach.<\/p>\n<p>Energy security is \u201clegitimate and desirable\u201d while independence is \u201clikely unattainable\u201d and Hydrocarbons will \u201cremain dominant\u201d even in low carbon scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>Hayward said that the U.K. need to confront climate change through &#8220;the lowest-cost energy pathways&#8221; and added<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Today we say \u2018there are no silver bullets.\u2019 A century ago Churchill said the same thing in the language of his time when he declared that &#8216;Safety and certainty in oil lie in variety and variety alone.&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He stressed efficiency as the most effective way to achieve carbon reduction and again pushed natural gas \u2013 of which BP has plenty \u2013 as an effective way to curb greenhouse gas reductions using available technology.<\/p>\n<p>He also issued what sounded like a warning to politicians for the upcoming election, saying,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Equally, for those inclined to propose more radical action to wean Britain off imported hydrocarbons, there is an important distinction between energy security and energy independence.
