Ford Econoline, Dodge Tradesman, ChevyVan, GMC VanDura:  these names were the stuff of legend.  Outlandish airbrushed murals, most with some kind of sci-fi theme, graced the sides of these rolling motel rooms. The craze of building custom vans started in the seventies, and by the turn of the decade it was all but over.  Full sized vans make have been great places to go heels-up-to-Jesus, but they sucked for everything else.  They weren\u2019t fun to drive, they were damn near impossible to park and they sucked down gas like Lindsey Lohan sucks down appletinis.  By the time the minivan had made it\u2019s entry into US car culture, the full sized van\u2019s days were numbered.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_36352\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 510px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ridelust.com\/1970%e2%80%99s-flashback-custom-vans\/0c11f27508_tall_five_hundred\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36352\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ridelust.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/0c11f27508_tall_five_hundred-500x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"0c11f27508_tall_five_hundred\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" class=\"size-large wp-image-36352\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Joe Stevens<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Joe Stevens, a photographer and filmmaker, began documenting the surviving vans in a work he\u2019s called <a href=\"http:\/\/californiavans.arloartists.com\/portfolios\/22211-view-images\">&#8220;vans and the places they were\u201d<\/a>.  Shot throughout the West, Steven\u2019s images are captured on medium format film, not on digital media.
