{"id":283147,"date":"2010-02-05T12:00:55","date_gmt":"2010-02-05T17:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/?p=10949"},"modified":"2010-02-05T12:00:55","modified_gmt":"2010-02-05T17:00:55","slug":"windswept-clouds-over-boulder-bad-astronomy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/283147","title":{"rendered":"Windswept clouds over Boulder | Bad Astronomy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I love clouds, and Boulder is a never-ending and always-changing nebular cloudscape of them. <\/p>\n<p>Last Saturday I saw this out my home office window:<\/p>\n<p><center><a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/badastronomy\/4317187588\/in\/set-72157607165535706\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4060\/4317187588_a2fd0cbdf7.jpg\"><\/a><\/center><br clear=\"all\"><\/p>\n<p>It was gorgeous! It&#8217;s a lenticular (lens-shaped) orographic cloud; a cloud caused by moisture-laden air rising up and cooling as it passes over mountains. We see them here all the time just east of the Rockies, and when they get all lenticular it&#8217;s a very cool bonus.<\/p>\n<p>Orographic clouds aren&#8217;t limited to the Earth you know; <a rel=\"nofollow\"  href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/2009\/12\/22\/the-blue-clouds-of-the-red-planet\/\">other planets have atmospheres with some moisture and tall mountains to overcome as well<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some people think that science takes away the romance of nature. <em>Those people are wrong<\/em>.
