XM released one a while ago, but with a very limited selection. Since then I’ve really wanted to see them extend their presence to the BlackBerry platform. It makes sense, but there are obvious licensing issues that delayed the deal. As we learned late last week, however, the wait is pretty much over. Sirius SM has announced a new BlackBerry app which will provide over 120 of their most popular channels. The app doesn’t cover certain mainstream programming, however, so even current Sirius subscribers won’t be able to access them. Still, it’s a nice first foray into mobile.

The 120 channels include plenty of music, news, talk, sports, comedy, and other entertainment for Sirius XM subscribers. This includes, according to Sirius XM, MLB Home Plate, SIRIUS NFL Radio, NHL Home Ice, PGA TOUR, Mad Dog Radio with Chris Russo, CNN, Fox News Talk, NPR, The Foxxhole channel presented by Jamie Foxx, Blue Collar Comedy Radio, The Virus featuring Opie & Anthony, Playboy Radio, Rosie Radio, Oprah Radio, and Martha Stewart Living Radio.

What it does not include, however, are a number of programs that cause many users to subscribe to Sirius XM in the first place. Plenty of my friends subscribe to XM for the MLB Play-by-Play service, which streams radio broadcasts for all 30 MLB teams, and NFL Play-by-Play. The app will also not stream Sirius NASCAR Radio and, most importantly to many Sirius users, Howard Stern. I would think that broadcasting Howard Stern would only help the app.

If you’re a current Sirius XM subscriber, or want to subscribe to the service, you can get more information at http://www.siriusxm.com/blackberry/indexd.html. The app is available for the the Curve 8500 series, 8900 series, the Bolds 9000 and 9700, all Storm models, and the Tour.

This post originated at BBGeeks.com – home to all things Blackberry!
