{"id":292831,"date":"2010-02-08T11:00:43","date_gmt":"2010-02-08T16:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/firedoglake.com\/?p=65777"},"modified":"2010-02-08T11:00:43","modified_gmt":"2010-02-08T16:00:43","slug":"palin-drives-libertarians-out-of-tea-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/292831","title":{"rendered":"Palin Drives Libertarians out of Tea Party"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_65787\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 310px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/gaume\/2877164431\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-65787\" title=\"Palin &amp; lipstick\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.firedoglake.com\/1\/files\/2010\/02\/Palin-lipstick-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">&quot;But I brought party favors!&quot; (photo: Joe Burbank via tgaume)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sarah Palin got a lot of publicity for speaking at the Tea Party convention in Nashville, but I&#8217;m not sure she knew where she was because her Sunday morning follow-up\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/rawstory.com\/2010\/02\/palin-war-with-iran-would-help-obama\/\">hit a sour note note<\/a> that destroyed whatever support she got from appearing there in the first place:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">President Barack Obama won&#8217;t be re-elected in 2012 unless he can &#8220;toughen up&#8221; on national security, according to Sarah Palin. <strong>The former Governor of Alaska believes that declaring war on Iran could help the president get re-elected.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Say he decided to declare war on Iran or decided really to come out and do whatever he could to support Israel, which I would like him to do,&#8221; Palin told Fox News&#8217; Chris Wallace Sunday. &#8220;That changes the dynamics in what we can assume is going to happen between now and three years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She might as well have said &#8220;let&#8217;s burn the constitution and expand the Fed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Granted, the tea party messaging can be pretty schizophrenic and has often served as a grab bag of anti-Obama sentiment.\u00a0 But their primary message has always been economic, and they have their roots in the libertarian-leaning, anti-interventionist conservatism of Ron Paul.<\/p>\n<p>Tea party star <a href=\"http:\/\/allenwestforcongress.com\/issues\/\">Allen West<\/a>, who raised <a href=\"http:\/\/allenwestforcongress.com\/tag\/ron-klein\/\">over twice as much in the 4th quarter of 2009<\/a> than Democratic incumbent Ron Klein (FL-22), says &#8220;We must get away from occupation warfare and nation building.&#8221;\u00a0 Rand Paul, who is very likely to win Jim Bunning&#8217;s Kentucky Senate seat, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2009\/11\/12\/qa-with-rand-paul-shaking-up-the-kentucky-senate-race\/tab\/article\/\">would&#8217;ve voted against the war in Iraq<\/a> and wants a constitutional declaration to continue the war in Afghanistan.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelmoore.com\/words\/latest-news\/anti-war-activist-mounts-gop-campaign-congress\">Adam Kokesh<\/a> is running as an anti-war candidate against Democratic Rep. Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n in New Mexico&#8217;s third congressional district (Lujan voted for the war supplemental).<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a tension within the conservative movement right now between the more social conservative, neocon wing that Palin represents, and the anti-tax tea party libertarians who have stronger paleo leanings.\u00a0 The latter have an ugly nativist streak, but they are straining to get away from George Bush&#8217;s war.\u00a0 It&#8217;s gays &amp; God vs. guns.<\/p>\n<p>There was a lot of pushback because of <a href=\"http:\/\/dailypaul.com\/node\/124087\">the price of the Palin tickets<\/a>, and many of the rank-and-file tea party activists see her as a symbol of the establishment GOP&#8217;s attempt to <a href=\"http:\/\/politics.nashvillepost.com\/2010\/02\/07\/the-begining-of-the-end-sarah-palin-hijacks-the-tea-party-movement\/\">co-opt their nascent movement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Palin evidently thought she could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glasgowdailytimes.com\/statenews\/kentuckystatehouse_story_032184236.html\">endorse Rand Paul<\/a> and they&#8217;d all throw flowers at her feet. Instead they&#8217;re <a href=\"http:\/\/dailypaul.com\/node\/124349\">having a melt down over her speech<\/a>, trying to figure out <a href=\"http:\/\/dailypaul.com\/node\/124275\">how to keep the neocons out of future conventions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than navigating the gulf between the tea party activists and the GOP, Palin drove a wedge between them.<\/p>\n<p>Well, at least she had the good sense not to mention <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSN3125537020080901\">her Bridge to Nowhere<\/a>.
