With that, however, comes the inevitable &#8211; browser crashes. <\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin-left: 10px;\"><script type=\"text\/javascript\">tweetmeme_url = 'http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/archives\/extensions_broke_your_browser_how_to_enter_safe_mo.php';tweetmeme_source = 'rww';<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/tweetmeme.com\/i\/scripts\/button.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>While Google Chrome doesn&#8217;t have a safe mode in the same way the Firefox or Windows does, it does offer another option that provides the same functionality and can save you a whole bunch of trouble.<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\"><em>Sponsor<\/em><br \/><a href='http:\/\/d.ads.readwriteweb.com\/ck.php?n=18160&amp;cb=18160' ><img src='http:\/\/d.ads.readwriteweb.com\/avw.php?zoneid=14&amp;cb=18160&amp;n=18160' border='0' alt='' \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The folks over at the <a href=\"http:\/\/googlesystem.blogspot.com\/\">Google Operating System blog<\/a> pointed out <a href=\"http:\/\/googlesystem.blogspot.com\/2010\/02\/google-chrome-safe-mode.html\">this tip<\/a> today and we thought it was a worthwhile how-to for our readers.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve found yourself in the terrible position of having a broken version of Chrome and you don&#8217;t want to uninstall and start over from scratch, you can instead launch Chrome using &#8220;incognito mode&#8221;, which disables extensions and allows you to disable the bad apple extensions. <\/p>\n<p>Setting up a shortcut to launch Chrome in incognito mode is a simple four-step process:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"chrome-incognito-shortcut.png\" src=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/images\/chrome-incognito-shortcut.png\" width=\"410\" height=\"531\" hspace=\"5px\" vspace=\"5px\" style=\"float:right;\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>We recommend first making a copy of your shortcut, that way you can access the browser normally too, once you&#8217;ve fixed whatever problem you&#8217;re experiencing.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Find your copied Chrome shortcut, right click on it and select &#8220;Properties&#8221;.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Select the &#8220;Target&#8221; field and append &#8220;&#8211;incognito&#8221; to the end of the command.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Click &#8220;Apply&#8221; and then &#8220;Okay&#8221; to save your changes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nNow, all you have to do is double click on the edited shortcut to enter into a &#8220;Safe Mode&#8221;-style Chrome. From here, all you&#8217;ll need to do is enter &#8220;chrome:\/\/extensions\/&#8221; (minus the quotes) into the browser&#8217;s navigation bar to edit the extensions. <\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re unsure which extension broke Chrome&#8217;s back, simply disable them all and switch back and forth between incognito Chrome and regular Chrome until you break it again.<\/p>\n<p>And while we&#8217;re speaking of Chrome extensions, we recommend going and getting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/archives\/get_the_readwriteweb_chrome_extension.php\">ReadWriteWeb extension<\/a> to keep up to date with everything we post here.
