Or you can plug cords into a power strip and switch<br \/>\nit off whenever you want to cut off all power to appliances.<\/p>\n<p>But many consumers wonder if it&#8217;s worth the hassle to unplug<br \/>\nelectronics they aren&#8217;t using. The answer, of course, depends on your<br \/>\nobjectives. <\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s true that an &#8220;informed and aggressive approach<br \/>\ncan reduce standby use by about 30 percent,&#8221; according to scientists at the <a href=\"http:\/\/standby.lbl.gov\/faq.html\">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,<\/a><br \/>\n&#8220;There are more productive ways to save energy with an investment of an hour.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The upshot? If it&#8217;s easy for you to unplug chargers and<br \/>\nother electronics when you aren&#8217;t using them, then go for it. And no-one says<br \/>\nyou have to unplug everything. You might want to <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/75\/vampire-power-costs.html\">choose<br \/>\nthe biggest energy hogs<\/a> or items that are easily unplugged.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>But don&#8217;t fret if you find the job too tedious or hard to<br \/>\nremember. The following actions are all easy and, in some cases, save you more<br \/>\nmoney with much less effort than stamping out energy vampires. <\/p>\n<p>Pick and choose what works best for you from this list, or try everything for an estimated annual savings of $275.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"unIndentedList\">\n<li>\nActivating <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/20\/how-to-enable-the-power-save-mode-on-your-computer.html\">the<br \/>\npower-save function on your computer<\/a> is a super-easy way to shave up to $90<br \/>\na year off your utility bills. Exactly how much you save depends on whether you<br \/>\nuse a laptop or a CPU and a monitor and how long you currently leave your<br \/>\ncomputer on for. <\/p>\n<p>Low power mode also <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.eere.energy.gov\/consumer\/tips\/home_office.html\">helps<br \/>\nequipment run cooler<\/a> so it lasts longer. Get <a href=\"http:\/\/www.energysavers.gov\/your_home\/appliances\/index.cfm\/mytopic=10070\">into<br \/>\nthe habit of turning off your monitor<\/a> when you walk away for 20 minutes and<br \/>\nyour computer when you leave your desk for more than two hours, and you&#8217;ll rack<br \/>\nup even more savings. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"unIndentedList\">\n<li>\nReduce the brightness setting of your<br \/>\ntelevision. Select the &#8220;home&#8221; mode because the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplesteps.org\/home-garden\/energy\/efficient-tvs\">&#8220;<\/a>retail&#8221;<br \/>\nor &#8220;vivid&#8221; mode (the default setting for most TVs) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simplesteps.org\/home-garden\/energy\/efficient-tvs\">uses up to 25 percent more power<\/a>, according to<br \/>\nthe Natural Resources Defense Council. <\/p>\n<p>While you&#8217;re at it, activate the energy-<br \/>\nand power-saving modes on your TV and other appliances and <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/amorylovins\/22\/nine-no-cost-ways-to-reduce-your-home-energy-use.html\">save<br \/>\naround $43.04 a year<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"unIndentedList\">\n<li>\nVideo game consoles, such as the Sony PlayStation<br \/>\n3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, use nearly the same amount of power when they are<br \/>\nturned on and left idle as they do when you are actively playing a game or<br \/>\nwatching a movie. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/21\/stop-wasting-money-video-games-and-energy-efficiency.html\">Save<br \/>\nmore than $100 a year<\/a> by remembering to turn off your gaming system whenever<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re not using it. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"unIndentedList\">\n<li>\nSwitching off unneeded lights will save you<br \/>\n$21.04 a year. Does it <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/the_conscious_consumer\/61\/when-to-switch-off-your-lights.html\">make<br \/>\nsense to turn off the light when you leave a room<\/a> for a few minutes? Yes<br \/>\nfor incandescent bulbs. Fifteen minutes is a good rule of thumb for compact<br \/>\nfluorescent light bulbs. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking of CFLs, Consumer Reports&#8217; tests found that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenerchoices.org\/products.cfm?product=greensh&#038;pcat=homegarden\">each<br \/>\nCFL will save you around $5 a year<\/a> in electricity costs over a regular<br \/>\nbulb. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"unIndentedList\">\n<li>\nWash your clothes in cold water. You&#8217;ll reduce<br \/>\nyour bill by around <a href=\"http:\/\/green.yahoo.com\/blog\/amorylovins\/22\/nine-no-cost-ways-to-reduce-your-home-energy-use.html\">$18.58<br \/>\na year<\/a> and it&#8217;s better for your clothes. <\/p>\n<p>Even just switching your<br \/>\ntemperature setting from hot to warm water can cut a load&#8217;s energy use by half,<br \/>\naccording to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.eere.energy.gov\/consumer\/tips\/laundry.html\">Department of<br \/>\nEnergy<\/a>. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><em>Environmental journalist Lori Bongiorno shares green-living tips and product reviews with Yahoo!
