{"id":295510,"date":"2010-02-08T23:30:34","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T04:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.circleofblue.org\/waternews\/?p=11507"},"modified":"2010-02-08T23:30:34","modified_gmt":"2010-02-09T04:30:34","slug":"obama-administration-pledges-78-5-million-to-fight-asian-carp-great-lakes-governors-want-more-than-cash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/295510","title":{"rendered":"Obama Administration Pledges $78.5 Million To Fight Asian Carp; Great Lakes Governors Want More Than Cash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A $78.5 million pledge from the Obama administration and a plan for part-time closure of Chicago-area locks isn&#8217;t enough to protect the Great Lakes from Asian carp, Michigan\u2019s governor declared Monday.<\/em><span id=\"more-11507\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"photoCenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.circleofblue.org\/waternews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/carp-JL2-590.jpg\" alt=\"Jumping Asian Carp\" title=\"Jumping Asian Carp\" width=\"590\" height=\"259\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11558\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"photoCredit\">Photo \u00a9 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonlindsey.com\/\">Jason Lindsey<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"photoCaption\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Following a Monday \u201ccarp summit\u201d at the White House with Obama administration officials, Governor Jennifer Granholm said in a statement that she was \u201cvery disappointed\u201d with the administration\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we did have some areas of agreement with the White House, we believe that the plan does not adequately address the concerns we have been voicing about the imminent threat Asian carp pose to the Great Lakes,\u201d Granholm said. \u201cI believe the proposal\u2019s primary objectives are not sustainable, and that this is a plan to limit damages \u2014 not solve the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michigan officials and several representatives from other states in the region have called for immediate closure of the Chicago locks. They hope to prevent the invasive fish species from decimating the Great Lakes\u2019 $7 billion sportfishing industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the Obama administration and the state of Illinois have opposed the move.
