{"id":298540,"date":"2010-02-09T15:14:54","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T20:14:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/?p=6458"},"modified":"2010-02-09T15:14:54","modified_gmt":"2010-02-09T20:14:54","slug":"ccny-junior-luisirene-hernandez-receives-travel-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/298540","title":{"rendered":"CCNY JUNIOR LUISIRENE HERN\u00c1NDEZ RECEIVES TRAVEL GRANT"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>\u2014 One of 13 Minority Students to Present Poster at Biophysical Society Annual Meeting in San Francisco \u2014<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Luisirene Hern\u00e1ndez, a junior majoring in biochemistry at The City College of New York (CCNY), is one of 13 students nationwide selected to receive a Minority Travel Award to attend the Biophysical Society\u2019s 54th Annual Meeting in San Francisco.\u00a0 During the meeting, February 20 \u2013 24, she will present a poster \u201cObtaining Functionally Relevant Protein Structural Transitions Using a Combined Physics\/Structure-Based Coarse Grained Model,\u201d and be honored at a reception February 20.<\/p>\n<p>Working in the lab of Dr. <a id=\"http:\/\/www.sci.ccny.cuny.edu\/~mceruso\/|\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sci.ccny.cuny.edu\/%7Emceruso\/\">Marco Ceruso<\/a>, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Ms. Hern\u00e1ndez investigated the conditions under which a computer simulation technique called ELNEDIN could more readily identify functionally relevant directions of conformational change in large protein structures.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www1.ccny.cuny.edu\/advancement\/pr\/images\/Prof-M-Ceruso-L-Hernandez_2.jpg\" border=\"1\" alt=\"Junior Luisirene Hernandez and Professor Marco Ceruso review computer-generated protein structural transition simulations.\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"8\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" align=\"right\" \/><\/p>\n<p>ELNEDIN, which was developed by Professor Ceruso and colleagues in the the Netherlands, combines an elastic network with a physics-based coarse-grained force field.\u00a0 She also investigated how modifying the topology of the elastic network affects the dynamic behavior of ELNEDIN models.<\/p>\n<p>The thrust of the research is to study how well conformational changes associated with the function of proteins can be reproduced, Professor Ceruso explained.\u00a0 Noting that coarse-grained models have limitations, he pointed out that \u201cLuisirene\u2019s research tries to understand the comfort zone within which the models can predict these changes reliably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Hern\u00e1ndez, who was born in New York and attended high school in the Dominican Republic, said she joined Professor Ceruso\u2019s lab two years ago because his research was \u201cdifferent from what everyone else was doing.\u201d\u00a0 The lab develops new tools for accurately modeling and simulating very large macromolecular assemblies in realistic environments.
