{"id":299276,"date":"2010-02-08T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:consumerfreedom.com:\/\/de739c690de064901ce277ead1c49341"},"modified":"2010-02-08T19:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-09T00:00:00","slug":"cspi-kings-of-gripe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/299276","title":{"rendered":"CSPI: Kings of Gripe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>The food scolds at the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/activistcash.com\/organization_overview.cfm\/o\/13-center-for-science-in-the-public-interest\">Center for Science in the Public Interest<\/a>&nbsp;(CSPI) have long had bone<\/span>s&nbsp;<span>to pick with<\/span>&nbsp;&#8212;&nbsp;well, seemingly&nbsp;<i>ever<\/i><i>ything<\/i>&nbsp;<span>that tastes good, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/4036-a-godzilla-of-corny-hype\">movie theater popcorn<\/a>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cspiscam.com\/quotes.cfm\">fettuccine alfredo<\/a>. One of CSPI&rsquo;s <\/span>best-known ongoing campaigns,&nbsp;along with&nbsp;trying to replace &ldquo;yummy&rdquo;&nbsp;with&nbsp;&ldquo;food porn,&quot;<span>&nbsp;has been to demonize soft drinks, which&nbsp;<\/span><span>the group&nbsp;<\/span><span>calls &ldquo;liquid candy&rdquo; in<\/span>&nbsp;<span>the hope that<\/span>&nbsp;governments&nbsp;<span>will tax them. Today,&nbsp;<i>Consumer Affairs&nbsp;<\/i>reports that CSPI has taken its extreme <\/span>self-righteousness<span> to new levels,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumeraffairs.com\/news04\/2010\/02\/cspi_coke_size.html\">attacking a soft drink maker for <i>reducing <\/i>the portion sizes<\/a>&nbsp;of its drinks<\/span><span>, and thus &ldquo;<\/span>charging more money for less product.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span>Putting aside the issue of marginal cost economics for beverages (the reason a 20 oz. coffee doesn&rsquo;t cost twice&nbsp;<\/span><span>as much as&nbsp;<\/span><span>a 10 oz. coffee), it&rsquo;s hard to see why CSPI is complaining. In fact, CSPI has often grumbled about&nbsp;<i>large<\/i>&nbsp;portion sizes.<\/span>&nbsp;<span>On its Nutrition Policy website, CSPI&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cspinet.org\/nutritionpolicy\/food_advertising.html\">blames<\/a>&nbsp;large portions as one reason why it&rsquo;s &ldquo;hard to eat well&rdquo;:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>[S]<span>oft drink portion sizes have greatly increased.&nbsp; In the 1950s, a bottle of Coke was 6 &frac12; ounces. Now, it&rsquo;s most commonly 20 ounces&hellip;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>CSPI, if anything, should be issuing a&nbsp;<\/span>congratulatory&nbsp;press release <span>to soda companies for actually listening to its complaints<\/span>.&nbsp;But&nbsp;that praise<span>, apparently,<\/span>&nbsp;is<span> only for companies&nbsp;<\/span>that&nbsp;sell boiled kale, <span>navy beans<\/span>, and butternut squash.&nbsp;<span>Even&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/activistcash.com\/biography.cfm\/b\/1289-kelly-brownell\">Kelly &ldquo;Big Brother&rdquo; Brownell<\/a>, no fan of soft drink makers,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/all-we-can-eat\/food-politics\/a-new-coke-well-its-smaller.html\">wasn&rsquo;t negative on this portion reduction<\/a>: &ldquo;In principle, it&#8217;s good to offer smaller servings.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There&rsquo;s little doubt that CSPI, which sees&nbsp;<\/span>endless&nbsp;<span>value in heavy-handed regulations, feels threatened by proactive, self-regulatory approach<\/span><span>es that don&rsquo;t include their own brand of culinary handcuffs<\/span>.&nbsp;Could this&nbsp;latest&nbsp;food tantrum&nbsp;<span>indicate a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/activistcash.com\/biography.cfm\/b\/3381-marion-nestle-dr\">Marion Nestle<\/a>&#8211;<\/span>inspired&nbsp;<span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/2655-marion-nestle-nutritionist-or-anti-capitalist\">anti-capitalist streak<\/a><\/span>&nbsp;<span>at CSPI?<\/span>&nbsp;P<span>erhaps it&rsquo;s just a reminder that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerfreedom.com\/news_detail.cfm\/h\/4013-cspis-latest-dietary-flip-flop\">you can&rsquo;t spell &ldquo;hypocrisy&rdquo; without C-S-P-I<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The food scolds at the&nbsp;Center for Science in the Public Interest&nbsp;(CSPI) have long had bones&nbsp;to pick with&nbsp;&#8212;&nbsp;well, seemingly&nbsp;everything&nbsp;that tastes good, from movie theater popcorn&nbsp;to&nbsp;fettuccine alfredo.
