\"\"The leaders of Illinois’ public universities say they want the money the state has promised them.<\/p>\n

University presidents and chancellors on Tuesday asked Gov. Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes to set a payment schedule so they can collect the more than $735 million in state payments they’re owed.<\/p>\n

The state faces a deficit that could be $13 billion this year and is limping through the fiscal year by not paying bills and borrowing money.<\/span><\/p>\n

The universities say they’ve tried to make up for the money the state owes them by cutting budgets, imposing furlough days and freezing hiring and salaries.<\/p>\n

But the universities say all their cuts can’t cover the state appropriations they aren’t receiving.<\/p>\n

Hynes’ office issues the checks to pay the state’s bills.<\/p>\n
