{"id":301765,"date":"2010-02-10T10:55:17","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T15:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c60fd53ef0120a886bad8970b"},"modified":"2010-02-10T11:03:25","modified_gmt":"2010-02-10T16:03:25","slug":"daley-sends-watchdog-plan-to-wary-city-council","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/301765","title":{"rendered":"Daley sends watchdog plan to wary City Council"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Posted by Hal Dardick <\/em>at 9:52 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Richard Daley this morning officially unveiled his proposal to let the city inspector general probe aldermen and their employees \u2014 a change first rejected by City Council 20 years ago when Daley created the watchdog office.<br \/><\/br>\u00a0<br \/><\/br>At today&#8217;s City Council meeting it is expected that Daley&#8217;s amendment to the IG ordinance will be referred to the Rules and Ethics Committee. Ald. Richard Mell, 33rd, who is chairman of that key committee, told the Tribune that he has yet to form an opinion on the proposal but expects to conduct a hearing to consider it. Other aldermen have already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/ct-met-daley-city-hiring-0210-20100209,0,6485644.story\">expressed concern<\/a> the plan would give the mayor more control over the legislative branch.<br \/><\/br><br \/><\/br><\/p>\n<p>The proposal provides a minimum level of funding for the inspector general\u2019s office, but Ald. Joe Moore, 49th, who proposed a similar measure last year, said the level of funding specified in Daley\u2019s proposal would not increase funding to the office.<br \/><\/br>\u00a0<br \/><\/br>As a result, the inspector general\u2019s staff could be spread thin between investigating the Daley administration and City Council, if aldermen approve the changes as is, Moore said.
