{"id":303924,"date":"2010-02-10T16:44:56","date_gmt":"2010-02-10T21:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"tag:blogs.rj.org,2010:\/rac\/\/2.2443"},"modified":"2010-02-10T18:02:52","modified_gmt":"2010-02-10T23:02:52","slug":"im-going-to-texas-and-im-packing-my-tallit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/303924","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m Going to Texas, and I&#8217;m Packing my Tallit!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        This weekend, I will be joining NFTYites from across the country at <a href=\"http:\/\/greene.urjcamps.org\/\">URJ Greene Family Camp<\/a> for <i>Veida<\/i>, which is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfty.org\/\">NFTY<\/a>&#8216;s yearly business and elections meeting. Along with my three-ounce bag of liquids, URJ camp sweatshirt, and plenty of RAC stickers, I am packing my <i>tallit<\/i>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Many of you are familiar with the recent events concerning the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urj.org\/israel\/wow\"><b>Women of the Wall<\/b><\/a>, a progressive Israeli prayer group that meets at the Western Wall every Rosh Chodesh, or first day of the Jewish month. One member of their group was <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.rj.org\/rac\/2009\/11\/woman_arrested_for_wearing_tal.html\">arrested for wearing a tallit (prayer shawl) at the Wall<\/a>, and Anat Hoffman, the leader of the Women of the Wall and Executive Director of the RAC&#8217;s Israeli counterpart, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irac.org\/\">Israel Religious Action Center<\/a>, was <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.rj.org\/rac\/2010\/01\/up_against_the_wall_anat_hoffm.html\">fingerprinted and interrogated<\/a> due to the actions of their group.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Religious freedom is at risk in Israel, and the Reform Movement has taken a central role in <a href=\"http:\/\/urj.org\/about\/union\/pr\/2010\/?syspage=article&amp;item_id=31640\">speaking out in support of the Women of the Wall<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We have a unique opportunity in that NFTY&#8217;s <i>Veida<\/i> falls on <i>Rosh Chodesh<\/i> &#8211; the new Jewish month of <i>Adar<\/i> begins on Sunday. During services throughout the weekend, we will be including readings in support of the Women of the Wall.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>        Additionally, I welcome anyone who feels comfortable to wear a tallit at <em>Veida<\/em>&#8216;s services as a symbol of solidarity with the Women of the Wall and their struggle for religious equality. And if you won&#8217;t be with us in Texas this weekend, I invite you to do the same in your home communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>NFTYites: if you are able, I invite you to bring a <i>tallit<\/i> (or two, if you have more to share!) to <i>Veida<\/i>.
