Look no further than your own backyard! Tomorrow is the start of the 13th annual <a title=\"Great Backyard Bird Count\" href=\"http:\/\/www.birdsource.org\/gbbc\">Great Backyard Bird Count<\/a>, when beginning bird watchers and experts alike across North America count the wild birds they see in their backyards, parks, or wildlife refuges. <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"February 12-15, 2010, Great Backyard Bird Count, with Bluejay\" hspace=\"15\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.usa.gov\/roller\/govgab\/resource\/images\/s-gbbc.jpg\" align=\"right\" vspace=\"20\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The event, which is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, The Audubon Society, and Bird Studies Canada, is cosponsored by the <a title=\"National Resources Conservation Service\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcs.usda.gov\/\">National Resources Conservation Service<\/a> and the <a title=\"National Science Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the four-day event, which runs through President&#8217;s Day, participants use <a title=\"checklist\" href=\"http:\/\/gbbc.birdsource.org\/gbbcApps\/checklist\">checklists<\/a> to count birds for 15 or more minutes a day and then <a title=\"enter count results\" href=\"http:\/\/gbbc.birdsource.org\/gbbcApps\/input\">enter the results online<\/a>. You can explore <a title=\"real-time bird count\" href=\"http:\/\/www.birdsource.org\/gbbc\/\">real-time maps and charts<\/a> to see what other people are reporting in your state or anywhere in North America, and you can <a title=\"tweet about GBBC\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=-RT%20%23gbbc\">tweet<\/a> about your findings, too. If you took some great snapshots of our fine feathered friends during the count, consider entering them in the <a title=\"GBBC photo contest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.birdsource.org\/gbbc\/photo-contest-rules\">photo contest<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Results from the count help researchers compare the timing of birds&#8217; migrations with past years, and determine if populations of individual species are increasing or declining, among other things. Additionally, information from the Great Backyard Bird Count and other citizen-science surveys go into a <a title=\"international birding database\" href=\"http:\/\/www.birds.cornell.edu\/is\/research\/itr.html\">bird database<\/a> that is used by scientists around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Can&#8217;t participate in the count every day?
