\"\"SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois State Board of Education says a record numbers of Illinois students took Advanced Placement exams last year.<\/p>\n

But the proportion of students who passed the college-level exams continues to decline.<\/p>\n

Data released this week shows about 65 percent of the 2009 graduates who took an AP exam scored a 3 or higher. <\/span><\/p>\n

Five years ago, 72 percent of students posted a passing grade.<\/p>\n

Scores range from 1 to 5 and a 3 is needed to earn college credit.<\/p>\n

Officials with the College Board says the decline in pass rates is due to more diverse populations taking the exams. More low-income and minority students are taking AP exams, but many don’t have adequate preparation.<\/p>\n

It is a trend that is true nationwide.<\/p>\n
