Daley said he has ordered a \u201ccomprehensive management review\u201d of the city\u2019s largest department to make certain it\u2019s devoting \u201cevery dollar possible\u201d to keeping Chicago neighborhoods safe.<\/p>\n<p>In 1992, Daley hired the consulting firm Booz, Allen &amp; Hamilton to conduct a similar study of the police department, at a cost of nearly $1 million. <span id=\"more-17939\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among other things, its report recommended closing seven district stations to free hundreds of officers for the city\u2019s fledgling experiment with community policing.<\/p>\n<p>Daley initially embraced the recommendation but then shelved it after a community backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Daley made clear that station closings would not be on the table in the new study \u2014 not after the city has spent tens of millions of dollars in recent years replacing many district stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew police facilities become\u2026community anchors \u2014 a big part of the community.,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s not that wall of separation between the community and the police department, as compared to the old stations ,because the old stations were so small.
