{"id":312871,"date":"2010-02-12T11:46:35","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T16:46:35","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c5fcf53ef0128779574b0970c"},"modified":"2010-02-12T11:46:35","modified_gmt":"2010-02-12T16:46:35","slug":"city-employee-convicted-for-workers%e2%80%99-compensation-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/312871","title":{"rendered":"City Employee Convicted for Workers\u2019 Compensation Fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;\">Los Angeles:<\/span>\u00a0<br \/>\nOn Feb. 8, 2010, former City of Los Angeles employee, 51-year-old Olga<br \/>\nZavala-Edwards, was convicted of workers\u2019 compensation and insurance<br \/>\nfraud related to charges of filing a false claim for compensation.\u00a0<br \/>\nZavala-Edwards, who was a 24-year employee of the Los Angeles Police<br \/>\nDepartment (LAPD), was a civilian assigned to the Department\u2019s Jail<br \/>\nDivision as a supervisory detention officer.\u00a0 She was discharged from<br \/>\nher job on August 3, 2009. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nLAPD investigators from the Workers\u2019 Compensation Fraud Coordination<br \/>\nUnit, Special Operations Division, began investigating Zavala-Edwards<br \/>\nworkers\u2019 compensation claim involving an alleged industrial\/on-the-job<br \/>\ninjury shortly after the claim was submitted.\u00a0 The investigation<br \/>\ncentered on how the alleged Nov. 2, 2008, injury occurred, the actual<br \/>\nlocation where Zavala-Edwards claimed she was injured and what<br \/>\ninformation she had given to her treating physicians.\u00a0 The<br \/>\ninvestigation was conducted in partnership with the Los Angeles County<br \/>\nDistrict Attorney\u2019s Healthcare Fraud Division, Workers\u2019 Compensation<br \/>\nDivision of the City\u2019s Personnel Department and the Los Angeles City<br \/>\nAttorney\u2019s Office. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nThe investigation revealed that Zavala-Edwards did not tell the LAPD,<br \/>\nher doctors or investigators with the City Attorney\u2019s Office that her<br \/>\ninjury actually occurred at her home before she reported to work on<br \/>\nNov. 2. <\/p>\n<p>\nAs part of the criminal conviction for workers\u2019 compensation fraud, the<br \/>\ncourt ordered Zavala-Edwards to pay full restitution to the City of Los<br \/>\nAngeles in the amount of $7,654.71 for all salary and medical benefits<br \/>\nthe City paid as part of her fraudulent claim.\u00a0 In addition,<br \/>\nZavala-Edwards was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and<br \/>\nplaced on two years of summary probation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Los Angeles:\u00a0 On Feb. 8, 2010, former City of Los Angeles employee, 51-year-old Olga Zavala-Edwards, was convicted of workers\u2019 compensation and insurance fraud related to charges of filing a false claim for compensation.\u00a0 Zavala-Edwards, who was a 24-year employee of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), was a civilian assigned to the Department\u2019s Jail Division [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4161,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-312871","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/312871","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/4161"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=312871"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/312871\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=312871"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=312871"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=312871"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
