{"id":313284,"date":"2010-02-12T18:13:38","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T23:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/?p=6537"},"modified":"2010-02-12T18:13:38","modified_gmt":"2010-02-12T23:13:38","slug":"medgar-evers-college-appoints-distinguished-educational-administrator-and-professor-dr-moses-newsome-as-vice-president-for-external-relations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/313284","title":{"rendered":"Medgar Evers College Appoints Distinguished Educational Administrator and Professor Dr. Moses Newsome as Vice President for External Relations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Moses Newsome, Jr., a distinguished higher education administrator and professor, has been appointed Vice President for External Relations at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mec.cuny.edu\">Medgar Evers College<\/a> of the City University of New York. <\/p>\n<p>Concurrent with his appointment, what was known as the Office of Institutional Advancement and Development, comprising Development, Communications, Alumni Relations, Graphic Services, Web Services, and the College\u2019s Radio Studio and Television Station, will now be known as the Office of External Relations, under the supervision of Dr. Newsome. External Relations will also include Government Relations and Economic Development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to building on an already strong program here at Medgar Evers,\u201d said Dr. Newsome. \u201cWorking collaboratively with staff, we can take outreach to the next level, spreading information and forging new partnerships throughout Central Brooklyn and beyond.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud and privileged to have someone of Dr. Newsome\u2019s caliber on our administrative team,\u201d said President William L. Pollard. \u201cI have full confidence in his commitment to our goals and in his leadership skills to realize them.\u201d       <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Newsome\u2019s immediate plans include working with senior leadership to centralize the College\u2019s fundraising efforts, as well as strengthening the College\u2019s alumni relations program. He joins Medgar Evers College from Mississippi Valley State University where he most recently served as Vice President for Economic Development and Public Service. Prior to that, he was Visiting Professor of Social Work at Rutgers University and Visiting Professor of Social Work at Jackson State University. He has also served as Assistant Vice President and Dean of the School of Social Work at Norfolk State University in Virginia, and Associate Dean of the School of Social Work at Howard University in Washington, D.C. <\/p>\n<p>His accolades include selection as one of 13 outstanding faculty by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) in 2003 for its inaugural class of Kellogg Leadership Fellows in its National Leadership Institute \u2013 charged with training and developing the next generation of senior-level leaders at historically and predominantly black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the U.S. <\/p>\n<p>He has also been involved in community activities, serving as president of the Council on Social Work Education where he spearheaded a national campaign determining member needs and program priorities. In addition, he was president of the Greenwood-Leflore County United Way in Mississippi, and a board member of the Mississippi Delta Technology Council.   <\/p>\n<p>Dr. Newsome holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in Sociology from the University of Toledo, an M.S.W. from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin. He is married to Dr. Barbara Newsome. They have two daughters and three grandchildren. <\/p>\n<p>About <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mec.cuny.edu\">Medgar Evers College, CUNY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Medgar Evers College was founded in 1970 through the efforts from educators and community leaders in central Brooklyn. The College is named after Medgar Wiley Evers, a Mississippi-born black civil rights activist who was assassinated on June 12, 1963. The College is divided into four schools: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mec.cuny.edu\/academic_affairs\/business_school\/business_school_home.asp\">The School of Business<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mec.cuny.edu\/spcd\/\">The School of Professional and Community Development<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mec.cuny.edu\/academic_affairs\/libarts_ed_school\/libart_ed_schoolhome.asp\">The School of Liberal Arts and Education<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mec.cuny.edu\/academic_affairs\/science_tech_school\/sci_ht_schoolhome.asp\">The School of Science, Health, and Technology<\/a>. Through these Schools, the College offers 29 associate and baccalaureate degree programs, as well as certificate programs in fields such as English, Nursing, and Accounting.
