{"id":314514,"date":"2010-02-12T18:51:37","date_gmt":"2010-02-12T23:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"tag:typepad.com,2003:post-6a00d8341c60fd53ef0120a894b71e970b"},"modified":"2010-02-12T18:51:37","modified_gmt":"2010-02-12T23:51:37","slug":"mccain-says-senate-race-no-sure-thing-for-gop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/314514","title":{"rendered":"McCain says Senate race no sure thing for GOP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Posted by Monique Garcia<\/em> at 5:50 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Former Republican presidential nominee John McCain visited Chicago today, where he attended a closed-door fundraiser in support of Congressman Mark Kirk\u2019s bid for the Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama. <\/p>\n<p>McCain said he\u2019s supporting Kirk not only because of his record in Washington, but because of Kirk\u2019s experience as a Naval Reserve intelligence officer. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand that the key issue in Illinois and Arizona is jobs and jobs and jobs and the economy,\u201d said the Arizona senator. \u201cBut we are in two wars, and Mark Kirk brings a degree of knowledge and background on military and national security that is badly needed in the leadership of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>McCain would not speculate on the outcome of Kirk\u2019s race against Democrat Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, but he cautioned Illinois Republicans against assuming GOP victories in other Democratic stronghold states would mean an easy win for the ticket here. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople all over this country are angry, they\u2019re upset, they\u2019re frustrated,\u201d McCain said. \u201cSo, obviously the Scott Brown election in Massachusetts invigorated all of us, but we Republicans, including &#8230; Kirk, including me as I run for re-election, have to convince the American people we\u2019re worthy of their support. We haven\u2019t closed the deal yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCain also defended former running mate Sarah Palin over criticism for writing notes on her hand at a recent appearance, while also taking a jab at Obama in the process. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was of course entertained by the attacks that the media and the liberal media and the liberals in this country make on her,\u201d McCain said. \u201cWhich is more egregious? Reading from a word on your hand or a teleprompter? I mean, I continue to be entertained now by the continuous hysterical attacks on Sarah Palin who is very, very popular with a significant segment of the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCain added that he would \u201cabsolutely\u201d choose Palin as a running mate again, though he noted he\u2019s moved on from the 2008 election. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve put it behind me, I really have,\u201d McCain said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a good intellectual exercise to think of what might have been.
