{"id":321371,"date":"2010-02-15T02:20:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-15T06:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"tag:www.reallynatural.com,2010:\/\/2.2493"},"modified":"2010-02-15T02:20:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-15T06:20:00","slug":"desertification-threatens-38-percent-of-the-globe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/321371","title":{"rendered":"Desertification Threatens 38 Percent of the Globe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"namib-desert.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.reallynatural.com\/pictures\/namib-desert.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" height=\"328\" width=\"497\" \/><br \/>\nPublished in the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springerlink.com\/content\/112849\/\">International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment<\/a><\/em>, the first study of its kind &#8220;to include the impact of desertification&#8221; on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has found that &#8220;38% of the land surface of the world&#8221; is in danger of desertification.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2010-02\/f-sf-3ow020910.php\">EurekaAlert!<\/a> explains:\n<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a scientific methodology that objectively analyses the environmental impacts of an activity or process, taking in the full cycle, from extraction of raw materials right through to management of the waste generated at the end of this material&#8217;s useful life&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>By simultaneously using the LCA and a Geographic Information System (GIS), the researchers have shown that eight of these 15 areas can be classified as at risk of desertification, representing 38% of the land surface of the world.<\/p>\n<p>The eight natural areas at risk are coastal areas, the Prairies, the Mediterranean region, the savannah, the temperate Steppes, the temperate deserts, tropical and subtropical Steppes, and the tropical and subtropical deserts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The greatest risk of desertification (7.6 out of 10 on a scale produced using various desertification indicators) is in the subtropical desert regions &#8211; North Africa, the countries of the Middle East, Australia, South West China and the western edge of South America&#8221;, the scientist explains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Researchers hope the new information will make it possible to accurately evaluate &#8220;particular&#8221; human activities impact on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0754643239?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=reallynatural-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=0754643239\">desertification<\/a> in different regions.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/feedads.g.doubleclick.net\/~a\/JNxm-Z8qO2VXA-oxH97j03tnoyY\/0\/da\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feedads.g.doubleclick.net\/~a\/JNxm-Z8qO2VXA-oxH97j03tnoyY\/0\/di\" border=\"0\" ismap=\"true\"><\/img><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/feedads.g.doubleclick.net\/~a\/JNxm-Z8qO2VXA-oxH97j03tnoyY\/1\/da\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feedads.g.doubleclick.net\/~a\/JNxm-Z8qO2VXA-oxH97j03tnoyY\/1\/di\" border=\"0\" ismap=\"true\"><\/img><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published in the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment, the first study of its kind &#8220;to include the impact of desertification&#8221; on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has found that &#8220;38% of the land surface of the world&#8221; is in danger of desertification.
