Rell To Kickoff State&#8217;s 375th Anniversary Wednesday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Connecticut turns 375 years old this year, and the governor is planning to kickoff a year-long celebration this Wednesday at the State Library.<\/p>\n<p>The event is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m., and Gov. M. Jodi Rell will be joined by school children, historians and ceremonial guards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This celebration is for everyone &#8211;&nbsp;for the young and old, for those with deep roots and those who have recently called Connecticut home,&#8221; Rell said in a prepared statement. &#8220;It is&nbsp;a&nbsp;great state to live,&nbsp;work and raise a family. Over the course of 2010, we will honor Connecticut &#8211;&nbsp;its&nbsp;founders and future.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A 375th anniversary commission is putting together a calendar of events for the year.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the commission include Nikki O&#8217;Neill, wife of former Gov. William O&#8217;Neill, and former Lt. Gov. Eunice Groark.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ct.gov\/\">state&#8217;s website<\/a> offers a few facts about Connecticut in its&nbsp;&#8220;About Connecticut&#8221; section.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know that the state&#8217;s nickname, &#8220;The Constitution State,&#8221; was adopted by the legislature in 1959?<\/p>\n<p>The state&#8217;s population was 3.4 million, according to the 2000 U.S. Census, and the website says Connecticut has an area of 5,018 square&nbsp;miles. <\/p>\n<p>The state, of course, has&nbsp;169 towns.&nbsp;There&nbsp;are&nbsp;21 cities and nine boroughs. <\/p>\n<p>Noah Webster,&nbsp;who is known for his dictionary,&nbsp;was born in West Hartford. The Hartford Courant has been publishing its newspaper since 1764. <\/p>\n<p>Also, from 1703 to 1875, Connecticut had two capitals.
