{"id":326140,"date":"2010-02-16T08:43:00","date_gmt":"2010-02-16T13:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/british-inflation-more-than-expected"},"modified":"2010-02-16T08:43:00","modified_gmt":"2010-02-16T13:43:00","slug":"british-inflation-blows-past-government-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mereja.media\/index\/326140","title":{"rendered":"British Inflation Blows Past Government Targets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"float_right\" src=\"http:\/\/static.businessinsider.com\/image\/4b7a9feb0000000000ef2c55-400-\/chart.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Chart\" width=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Worrying signs of inflation just emerged in the UK, whereby prices rose well above the Government&#8217;s target.<\/p>\n<p>This could threaten the country&#8217;s ability to use easy-money to stimulate the economy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/economics\/interestrates\/7248956\/UK-inflation-pushed-to-14-month-high-of-3.5pc-by-increase-in-VAT.html\">Telegraph:<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[Emphasis added] Britain&#8217;s benchmark inflation rate jumped to 3.5pc in January to a 14-month high after a rise in value-added tax.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Mervyn King, the Bank of England Governor, has written to the Chancellor explaining why <strong>inflation has risen more than one percentage point above the 2pc target<\/strong>.  Mr King said in the letter that inflation had risen due to three &#8220;short-run factors. &#8220;First, the restoration of the standard rate of VAT to 17.5pc is raising prices relative to a year ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;Second, over the past year, oil prices have risen by around 70%.
