Employees from the two groups rarely visited one another\u2019s offices and avoided collaborating. One group even ate lunch at a different time than the other.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>Ray, a midlevel assistant manager, wanted to do something about the ongoing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/conflict\/\">conflict<\/a>. Relatively new to the company, he felt no strong allegiance to either side and sensed that the divisions were harming the company and making it difficult for him to do his job. Though he had no official role or mandate, Ray decided to take action. The problem was, he had no idea where to begin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>Many of us have been bystanders to a conflict that causes us real harm. In his book <em>The Third Side: Why We Fight and How We Can Stop <\/em>(Penguin Books, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/2000\/\">2000<\/a>), anthropologist William Ury gives advice to those stuck in the middle of a difficult conflict. For would-be negotiators who don\u2019t want to engage directly in conflict\u2014for reasons such as fear or lack of knowledge, resources, or authority\u2014the role of the third side provides an alternative.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><strong><span> <\/span>Become a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/problem-solving\/\">problem-solving<\/a> negotiator. <\/strong>\u201cMany people look at conflict and think, \u2018It\u2019s not my job to fix that problem,\u2019 or \u2018I feel helpless when faced with conflict,\u2019\u201d says Ury. \u201cWe think of conflicts as having two sides in opposition. In reality, the community often plays an important role.\u201d This community\u2014which might be made up of neighbors, friends, relatives, bystanders, and others\u2014is what Ury calls the <em>third side<\/em>. Third parties can \u201cfacilitate the prevention and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/resolution-of-conflict\/\">resolution of conflict<\/a>,\u201d and \u201ctogether they can be a more powerful force than a leader acting alone,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>Ury observed people in societies around the world who took on responsibility to help prevent, contain, or resolve conflict. In <em>The Third Side<\/em>, he describes 10 roles that bystanders can play in helping to bring about peace in their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/organization\/\">organization<\/a>s or communities:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>1.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>provider <\/em>helps people meet their needs, share ideas and resources, and feel protected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>2.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>teacher <\/em>gives lessons in tolerance and joint problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>3.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>bridge builder <\/em>forges relationships, fosters dialogue, and helps develop joint projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>4.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/mediator\/\">mediator<\/a> <\/em>brings parties to the table and helps reconcile conflicting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/interests\/\">interests<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>5.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>arbiter <\/em>determines <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pon.harvard.edu\/tag\/dispute\/\">dispute<\/a>d rights and promotes justice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>6.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>equalizer <\/em>helps build a collaborative democracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>7.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>healer <\/em>repairs injured relationships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>8.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>witness <\/em>calls attention to early warning signs and escalation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>9.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>referee <\/em>establishes rules for fighting and helps strengthen defenses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left: 0.75in; text-indent: -0.25in;\"><!--[if !supportLists]--><span>10.<span style=\"font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font-family: &quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\"> <\/span><\/span><!--[endif]-->The <em>peacekeeper <\/em>enforces the peace and preempts violence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span>The problem-solving negotiator helps alleviate conflict by taking on one or more of the 10 bystander roles that best meet her interests and suit her negotiation style. Of course, no one person should expect to perform strongly in each of these roles. \u201cIt can be empowering to know that there\u2019s a role that you can play that will fit with your negotiating style,\u201d says Ury. \u201cWe\u2019re all affected by conflict, and knowing that there\u2019s a role for you can make you feel less helpless.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adapted from \u201cWhen You\u2019re Stuck in the Middle,\u201d by Susan Hackley (Managing Director, Program on Negotiation), first published in the Negotiation newsletter.
